Course overview

More than a vertical prep.

A structured introduction to the Biologically Oriented Preparation Technique — from biological principles to vertical preparation, gingitage and provisionalisation.

A vertical preparation is one of the key elements. The way the sulcus is invaded and the tooth then provisionalised is what makes BOPT a specific concept — and what allows the gingival tissues to be thickened and contoured.

What is BOPT?

What if the restoration could help shape the tissue?

BOPT — Biologically Oriented Preparation Technique — uses a staged restorative approach in which preparation, soft-tissue management and provisionalisation work together to influence gingival architecture.

01 · Vertical Preparation

Prepare

A marginless, vertical preparation with no horizontal finish line. The natural CEJ — and any previous finish line — is removed.

Why BOPT?

01

Zenith control

The ability to control gingival zenith position — moving zeniths apically as well as coronally.

02

Biotype conversion

Using the concept to thicken gingival tissues.

03

Stability

Thicker gingival biotypes give more stable aesthetic results over time.

Who should attend?

  • General dental practitioners with restorative caseloads
  • Clinicians managing retreatment of failing crowns
  • Dentists interested in soft-tissue-led aesthetic restorative work
  • Implant and restorative clinicians seeking a prosthetic approach to tissue management

Learning outcomes

  1. 01Understand why BOPT is a staged concept, not simply a vertical preparation
  2. 02Appreciate the role of biological width and the CEJ in conventional preparations
  3. 03Understand the purpose of controlled gingitage
  4. 04Plan provisional restorations to the desired gingival contours and zenith positions
  5. 05Understand how provisional contour influences emergence profile
  6. 06Recognise the aims of biotype conversion and long-term tissue stability

Clinical journey

The BOPT
Experience

Follow one case from initial condition to long-term tissue stability. Clinical photography from the HEADROW Academy BOPT archive.

Initial condition: Existing zeniths and midline cant assessed against the desired final position.Planning: #11 and #12 planned to move apically; #21 and #22 planned to drop coronally.Vertical preparation: Marginless preparation — no horizontal finish line.Gingitage: Controlled sulcular invasion during preparation.Provisional: Lab-fabricated provisionals planned with zeniths in the ideal position.Healing: Relined provisionals on seating.Recording: Desired zenith position achieved after 40 days.Final restoration: Definitive restoration follows the established profile.Long-term stability: Final restorations at 4 years — note the thickening of the gingiva around the restoration margins.

Questions

FAQs

Is BOPT just a vertical preparation?

No. A vertical preparation is one key element, but BOPT is a specific concept: vertical preparation, controlled gingitage and provisional restorations shaped to the desired gingival contours.

What is a vertical preparation?

A preparation without a margin. The tooth is prepared into a marginless cone over which the final prosthesis sits, rather than to a horizontal finish line.

When are the 2027 course dates?
